Reclaim your Future - demonstrations
On the 10th Anniversary of the Bologna Declarations, 47 ministers of education met at the Hofburg in Vienna. The Bologna process is a political project aiming at creating a single European Higher Education Area by 2010 and putting the economic usability of degrees in the center of attention. Students from many countries formed a large demonstration, moving from the Western Train Station to the Hofburg, to make themselves heard - as students have hardly been involved in the Bologna process.

School Yard, not Underground Parking - demonstrations
In its quest to undermine Vienna with subterranean garages, the Viennese Social Democrat Party has had another glorious idea: a four-level underground garage underneath the school yard of the “GRG 17” High School in Vienna. The students as ‘temporary neighbours’ were not involved in the planning process - which provoked resistance and led to the establishment of a citizens’ initiative organising informative meetings and demonstrations. We have been to its last protest rally.

In the morning of December 21, 2009, Rector Winkler unexpectedly ordered the eviction of the Main Lecture Hall at the University of Vienna, which had been occupied by students for most of the semester. In the afternoon, students formed a spontaneous protest march. We have followed their march from the C1 lecture hall on the university campus (still occupied at that time) via Mariahilfer Straße (in full Christmas Fever) to the Gürtel.

Several non-students are expressing their solidarity with the protesters, as a a preliminary peak of the movement showed: Between 10.000 (according to the police) and 50.000 (according to the organisers) protesters were demonstrating in Vienna alone, demanding an immediate improvement of the Austrian education system.

Detention without Delict - demonstrations
The National Council is expected to adopt the bill on the amendment of the asylum and alien law drafted on behalf of the Austrian Minister of the Interior, Ms. Fekter, on November 21, 2009. Lightly recognizable, this leads to another tightening of the law. Detention pending deportation shall be extended and proceedings shall be shortened, thus leading to reduced possibilities for asylum seekers to file follow-up applications (when a first application for asylum has been rejected and circumstances have changed later on).
